Papers of Samuel Cooper [manuscript], 1780-1960.

Include correspondence of Cooper and his son, Samuel Cooper. Topics include reminiscences of the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Lexington, and service in the second Seminole War and in Texas and Florida, and other recollections of incidents and characters encountered in military service. Also include transcript of the constitution of the Society of the Cincinnati, of which the senior Cooper was a member; a notebook, ca. 1878, entitled "A Memoir of the Cooper Family"; notes and genealogical information on the Cooper family, and letter, 1877, Jefferson Davis to Fitzhugh Lee regarding the younger Cooper's character. Correspondents of Cooper and his son include the younger's wife, Sarah Maria Mason Cooper, James Champy, who writes about plantations and life in the West Indies, James Murray Mason, John Mason, I.H. Offley, Harriet Eveline Cooper, Jefferson Davis, General Beauregard, and R.R. Stevenson. Correspondence of the younger Cooper also relates to his service in the Confederate army, with specific topics including the first Battle of Bull Run and the Andersonville prison in Georgia.
